Free Subtitle Generator: SRT & VTT Files

A captions file for YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn and video editors. Viewers can turn it on or off.

How to make a subtitle file

  1. Choose your video or audio file. MP4, MOV, MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG and WebM all work, up to 60 minutes on a computer and 15 minutes on a phone.
  2. Pick the spoken language and press Make subtitles for free. Your browser listens to the file and times every line. The first time, it downloads the free speech model once.
  3. Read the lines. Each subtitle is in its own box, so you can fix a name or a word right on the page. Long lines are split in two at around 42 characters.
  4. Download SRT or VTT and upload the file where your video lives.

Subtitle file or captions on video?

A subtitle file sits next to your video: viewers turn it on or off, and the platform decides how it looks. Captions on video are drawn into the picture itself, so everyone sees them, with the style you choose. Use the file for YouTube and video editors, and captions on video for Reels, TikToks and Shorts.

Where to upload the file

Private and free

The speech recognition runs in your browser, so your file never leaves your device. There's no account, no limit on how many files you make, and nothing to install.

Questions

Is the subtitle generator free?

Yes. It runs on your own device, so there's no cost, no sign-up and no limit on the number of files.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Your browser reads the file and makes the subtitles on your device. Nothing is sent to Spokly.

SRT or VTT: which should I download?

SRT for YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn and most video editors. VTT for videos on your own website. You can download both from the same result.

Can I fix mistakes before downloading?

Yes. Every subtitle line is editable on the page. Fix names and words, then download. To change a timing, open the SRT file in a text editor or use your platform's subtitle editor.

Can viewers turn the subtitles off?

Yes, that's the point of a subtitle file: it's a separate track. If you want captions that are always on screen, for Reels, TikToks or Shorts, use Captions on video instead.
